Measuring the string is not as accurate as measuring inside the piano because old piano strings in fact may not be optimal. Measuring string paths inside the piano instead of copying old strings will produce strings that fit and sound better.

× "Measure Singles:"
Measure inside the piano along the string path with the old string in place or missing.
If the piano is not accessible, measure the string. Measure from the anchor point (inside the loop end of the string) to the upper termination (agraffe,capo,or guide pin) point on the steel string. This sometimes barely visible point is about 1/2 inches to 1 inches past the end of the winding closest to the tuning pin end. Measuring the string is not as accurate as measuring inside the piano because piano strings are elastic.

× "How to Measure the Distance Needed to Calculate the Price"
The OPTIMAL METHOD utilizes the Arledge Tape Measure while at the piano. Measure the string path inside the piano not the actual string. It doesn't matter if strings are missing.
1) CHOOSE the longest string or string path being ordered. For full sets this is the lowest or #1 string path.
2) MEASURE inside the piano by placing the Arledge tape measure over the hitch pin and record the distance in millimeters to the upper termination point (Agraffe,Capo, or Guide Pin). This distance is entered in the box.

An ALTERNATE METHOD can be used if the broken string is available but the piano is not.
1)MEASURE the actual string from the inside of the loop (at the furthermost loop end of the string) to the upper termination point on the steel string. A barely visable bend and or mark on the string represents this upper termination point. This bend and or mark results from contact with the agraffe, or capo bar and or guide pin.

This Upper Termination Point is usually about 1/2 inches to 1 inches past the end of the copper winding closest to the tuning pin end.
Measuring the old string is not as accurate as measuring inside the piano because piano strings are elastic and this mark may be as much as 3/8" shorter than the actual distance in the piano.

× "How to Measure the Distances Needed for Ordering a Stock Set"
The OPTIMAL METHOD utilizes the Arledge Tape Measure while at the piano. Measure the string path inside the piano, not the actual string. It doesn't matter if strings are missing.
1) Start by measuring the #1 string path being ordered. This measurement is also used to calculate the price.
2) Then measure the highest unichord,lowest bichord and highest bichord (and lowest /highest trichord and tenors if applicable).

It is not necessary to measure all the strings.

However, there is a FILE UPLOAD BOX further down on the form for technicains that prefer to measure every string.
